Gibson girls, what an honor, right? I’m so excited that I’ve been given Essence’s Best In Black Beauty Award, along with some other major beauty mavens like Pat McGrath! There’s a red carpet event to honor the award recipients on Tuesday, May 8th and I’m so looking forward to it. It’s an evening event so I’ll wear something fabulous, walk the red carpet, the whole bit. Janelle Monae will be presenting my award to me. I’m doing her hair for Vanity Fair, then seeing her that night, as well. So we’ll have lots of time to catch up.
It’s the first annual Black Beauty Awards for the magazine, so I’m so happy to have been chosen. It’s in the May issue, so don’t forget to check it out. So major!

Psychic Crystal Reading With New Age Psychic Linda
Off topic, but real talk: For my birthday, Jason gave me a crystal reading with new age psychic Linda and it was EVERYTHING, Gibson Girls.
The whole reading was more about my aura. Linda gave me two quartz-like crystals, which I now carry in my pocket and even brought me lunch when she came to the salon to give me the reading. Major, right? We discussed my past, present and future, and she was so on point. She made me think about things I need to accomplish and things I need to understand. We discussed how situations in my past have contributed (or not contributed) to what’s happening to me at the moment.
The experience was eye-opening and I feel like I have a handle on my life from a professional and personal perspective. I’d been putting things on the backburner and we brought those to the forefront. I feel energized by it! All of us get set in our ways sometimes. We fall into the routine. But eventually I realized I need to make over my professional life. I’m looking forward to shaking it up a bit. As the man known for makeovers, I’m now looking forward to my own makeover of sorts.

As Seen On Rachael Ray!
Gibson Girls, did you catch my hair glossary segment on Rachael Ray this week? On the show, I defined mystifying hair terms for the consumer. We discussed things like overlay, which means the hair is shorter underneath, longer on top, like how Rihanna used to wear her mane. We talked about bangs and all the different types, for example Rooney Mara’s are blunt. It’s important to know how to adapt that bang to suit your face.
Regarding color, ombre came up. People are still really loving it. It’s still really hot. I think it looks best if it’s not so exaggerated or if it’s a different color. Keep it within the same shade range and you’re MAJOR. For instance, I love Giuliana Rancic’s ombre lately. And if you can make it so that it’s a little red, blue or green? So cool. It’s updated, modern and not as drastic as not-found-in-nature colors used to be. Say bye to the stigma!
